Utilizing the New Frontier of Virtual Production

When we received the creative brief to capture Intel's IT Heroes, director Erich Joiner knew that filming in an LED volume on stage was a perfect solution. Not only does volume technology and virtual production ease the post-production workload, it allows filmmakers to literally inhabit "a galaxy far, far away" on budget and schedule.

The campaign was shot at MELS, a virtual production studio in Montreal. Tool made innovative use of virtual production, utilizing game engine technology to create the immersive virtual reality of outer space. The result is a unique, near-photorealistic world.

Leveraging Unreal Game Engine

Tool led the art direction for custom 3D graphics created via Unreal Engine. During production, this dynamic scenery was cast onto the LED volume behind a constructed space-station set, producing a hyperreal practical effect.

"For virtual production to be a true success, it has to be truly integrated by the production team. Tool has made it extremely possible from the very first day, we are surrounded by the ultimate pros. It’s one thing to have a great tool, but you need a master to be able to handle it in the proper way.”

VP of Digital Production, MELS
